Sevens Updates
Colorado
Monarch is still in boss mode.
Now holding a 7-0 record just two weeks into CO sevens, these guys are building a large gap between themselves and everybody else. Can anyone stop them?
Valor has come close — with a 14-21 result last week — but aside from that it’s been brutal for Monarch’s opponents so far.
Pennsylvania
Rain, rain, go away
The big nasty nor’easter rained out the HS boys tournament. The girls apparently still played, which is awesome. Thanks for making us look bad, ladies! ☔️
West Coast Sevens round 1
Carmichael Hawks victorious.
In their first hit out of the circuit, the Hawks looked, dare I say, nonchalant on their path to the HS Boys trophy. Seti Perona, now a senior, stepped into a leadership role and deftly guided the team to victory. He’s a savvy player. And don’t forget about guys like Cash Lazard, Noah Gomez, and a slew of speedsters on the edge. This team has enough pieces in place to take home a trophy on any given weekend.
We’ll see if the Carmichael boys can continue rolling through West Coast Sevens during the next stop on October 11th.
NC Sevens
The first weekend of North Carolina sevens was a hit. South Charlotte went a perfect 3-0 in the Elite division, and the Falcons and Redhawks both had solid 2-1 records.
🎥Our friends at 4G Performance captured some awesome highlights from the weekend, including this badass tackle by Miles Caple and this montage of Nehemiah Gill just generally dominating.
Ohio
St. Ignatius continues their undefeated season sitting at 5-0 and a 145-10 overall score line. Next up: a big match against St. Ed’s this weekend. See our Match of the Week below.
St. Xavier, meanwhile, turned out a great performance last weekend — besting Moeller 31-10 (after tying 12-12 in their previous meeting) and collecting wins over Walnut Hills and Dublin.
Shout out to prop Wyatt Meyer for imposing his will on kickoffs — winning four contested kicks on the weekend — and to flyhalf Colby Padgett for keeping the machine running smoothly on the attack. He managed to set up sophomore Ben Gutzwiller for five tries on the weekend while also scoring a few himself. Playmaker.
Indiana
Mudsock is on a 6-0 roll. They outscored opponents 132-28 last weekend after going 3-0 in week one.
Plus, they’re kinda crushing it on social media right now. Love the videos. Worth a follow.

Carmichael made it look easy at West Coast Sevens. Highlights for days.

🚨ANKLE BREAKER
This side-step by Greg Jones of St. Mary’s was nasty.

You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have.
This quote has been jingling around in my brain all week.
There are so many rugby analogies in there. Whether you’re a coach, a league administrator, a rugby media brand (ahem), or the CEO of USA Rugby itself, I think we all wish we had something bigger or better to help push this sport forward. More resources, more players, more exposure, more staff members…
And the war is a battle for relevance.
But our little army is passionate and committed. Once more into the breach, my friends.

St. Ignatius vs St. Edward
Oct. 4
Ohio Sevens
Ohio Sevens is in full swing right now, and St. Ignatius is up to their usual habit of steamrolling the competition — sitting pretty with a 5-0 record. But St. Ed’s is prowling at the door.
The rivalry between these two schools is well documented in the spring 15s season, with the Cavoli Cup punctuating the mutual respect between these guys.
St. Edward has had some serious young talent rising through the ranks the past couple seasons. While sevens doesn’t capture the full picture, it does serve as a preview for what’s to come.
St. Ignatius, the incumbents, look to continue a dominant stretch of sevens that includes 4 state titles and an insane 77-0 run over the past four seasons. The last time someone else won the Ohio title was in 2021, and that was… St. Ed’s.
But more recently, it took a last-second chip-and-chase from St. Ignatius to grind out a 7-5 win over St. Ed’s in round 1 of Ohio sevens play. That was two weeks ago.
And that’s what makes this our match of the week.
Can St. Ed’s make a statement, or will St. Ignatius slam the door?
14 minutes will tell the tale.

Oddball musings, thanks to the cold tub.
🏉 I’d venture to guess that less than 5% of parents (of high school players) actually care about the NCR vs CRAA debate. It probably has very little effect on the list of schools they want their kids to attend.
🏉 Touchdown “cellies” are — hands down — my least favorite part of watching the NFL right now. We already have cheerleaders, guys.
🏉 Dallen Stanford roasting Will Hooley for botching a kick years ago was one of the best parts of the commentary at West Coast Sevens. I need to find that clip.
That’s a wrap, gang!
Next week we’ll have more dope rugby stuff to share with you; scores, highlights, stories… all the goods.
